2A52 *NEW* Helen McNicoll and Canadian Impressionists
-Adult- | Available
“A new way of seeing” lured Canadians to Paris to study Impressionism in the late 19th century. Brymner, Cullen and Morrice then inspired Montreal painters such as Clarence Gagnon, Anne Savage, Nora Collyer and other Beaver Hall artists to bring this new style to the unique Canadian landscape. One artist, Helen McNicoll, pushed Impressionism the furthest “capturing the moment” in “short daubs of [sunlit] bright paint”. Fast forward into the DVSA studios, we’ll first analyze the techniques of these artists and then select one McNicoll outdoor scene to copy with the aim of better understanding and absorbing her process. Then, choose a second painting by one of these Montreal modernists or create your own Impressionist landscape composition. Lots of group discussion and individual instruction provided. Acrylics or oils. Some painting experience is recommended.
