2A44 Exploring Realism: Painting with Shadow and Light
-Adult- | Available
Shadow is seen unconsciously. Yet, it reveals volume, depth, mood and light direction. In this course, we’ll paint without colour and focus on tonal variation to create more realistic works. Sessions include exploring the anatomy of shadow, constructive drawing techniques, and ellipses in perspective through short drawing exercises. We’ll also practice layering glazes of white, dark grey and yellow on a grey-toned canvas—a technique pioneered by Russian artist Alexander Ivanov. Results can range from soft sculptural forms (grisaille) to dramatic lights/darks (chiaroscuro). Choose a simple still life set-up for your painting(s), either from photos or in-studio displays. Acrylics or oils. Some painting or drawing experience recommended.*Please note: there will be no class on October 12*
Members: $315.61 + HST, Non- Members: $325 + HST. Monday.
