Traditional Chinese brush painting, or guohua, is created using a brush dipped in black ink, typically applied to paper or silk. Imagine bringing this art form to life on your own ceramic piece. In this special “double the fun” class, you’ll begin working with Karen, exploring the unique brushstroke techniques and tools used in guohua. Then, under Karla's guidance, you’ll craft your own ceramic pieces. Finally, you'll complete your artistic journey by applying oxides and these elegant brush techniques to your very own ceramic creation. No previous experience needed – all levels welcome.
Members: $165.52 + HST, Non-Members: $169 + HST. (Prices include $15 firing & glazing fee and $30 material fee). Monday.
Karen Logan
A lifelong learner, Karen is always looking for opportunities to try new media, working between coloured pencil, pastel, acrylic and Chinese brush painting. She then passes this knowledge on to her students. With a background in technical illustration, Karen’s love of nature and Ontario’s native plants forms the focus of her work. She is a member of the Women’s Art Association of Hamilton (WAAH) and the Central Ontario Art Association (COAA).
Karla Rivera
Born and raised in Mexico City, Karla holds a Bachelor of Craft and Design in Ceramics from Sheridan College. She was acknowledged with the Pottery Supply House Award from Sheridan three years in a row and has been featured in a number of group shows in addition to being exhibited at The Gardiner Museum in Toronto. A resident of Hamilton and an instructor at DVSA, she continues to develop and create her own functional and sculptural work characterized by its restrained colour and a combination of geometry with classic forms.
