When Edgar Degas stated, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see,” he was referring to the artist’s perspective in painting. The experiments in this class will assist you in emulating rather than imitating what you observe and embracing the fact that your painting may not be an exact replica of your reference. Utilizing photographs and historical works as our starting point, we’ll abstract the shapes and gradually develop them into a novel interpretation of our reference material. We’ll explore the concepts of value massing, weight and counterweight, as well as the various ways in which we can combine artistic elements in unexpected ways. You’ll have the option of creating a fully representational, fully abstract or a combination of both painting styles. Color theory and mixing, composition principles and other relevant topics are included in this captivating class designed to kick you out of your comfort zone. For oils or acrylics or pastel. Some previous painting experience is recommended.

Members: $135.07 + HST, Non- Members: $139 + HST. Friday.
