One of the most important elements of landscape or urban painting is the ability to create meaningful, informative sketches and use them to bring the immediacy of field work into the studio. In this course, through demonstrations and plein-air work, you’ll learn outdoor sketching techniques in a variety of formats and media. We’ll then explore how to analyze and develop a studio piece based on the sketches. A basic sketching kit will be assembled in class on Day 1, but you’re encouraged to bring your own materials if you wish. Studio projects may be done in any medium. This is a course for intermediate to advanced artists – previous plein air experience is not required, but you should have developed skills in basic drawing and your choice of media. You’ll need to provide your own studio materials on Days 4 and 5.
