What this is about

This course provides guidance and training for field personnel such as maintenance crews, survey crews and utility crews in the planning, selection, application, and operation of short-term work zones. The training covers the applicable standards for work zone protection as contained in Part 6 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Objectives

  • Have a better understanding of the need for proper traffic control through work areas and for construction zone safety.
  • Be familiar with current work zone standards and requirements as contained in Part 6 of the MUTCD.
  • Have a fundamental knowledge of standard traffic control devices, their design, function, and application.
  • Be able to design and install traffic control schemes for short-term operations on two-lane and multilane streets and highways.
  • Understand proper flagging procedures.
  • Be aware of liability issues involving highway agencies performing construction and maintenance operations, and understand guidelines for protecting work zone personnel and their departments in case of litigation.

Registration

The registration fee is $150 per person. A city or county employee is eligible for a TTAP scholarship registration fee of $75. The fee includes materials only.

    CANCELLATION POLICY

    Due to schedule and travel commitments for our instructors, staff members, and training facilities, the registration fee is not refundable if a registrant withdraws less than 48 hours before the workshop. If you cannot attend, you may send a substitute participant to the workshop at no additional cost (please notify us in advance if possible).

    This workshop may be canceled due to low enrollment. If this situation occurs, TTAP will provide notification of cancellation due to low enrollment at least 48 hours before the scheduled start of the workshop, and all pre-paid registration fees will be refunded in full or applied to another scheduled workshop. If the workshop must be cancelled or postponed due to inclement weather or other circumstances beyond our control, TTAP will provide notification to all registered participants at the earliest possible time.

     
Spence Meyers

Spence is a 1991 graduate of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville Department of Anthropology. He has lead many archaelogical investigations across Tennessee. In this position Spence has worked closely with TDOT and transportation officials with many cities and counties across the state. He is the Technical Assistance Specialist at TTAP conducting ADT, turning movement counts and seatbelt use surveys. Throughout his career Spence has been called upon to train employees of all levels. Spence is also the webmaster for the TTAP website.
