Step into a world where ancient gods meet modern-day heroes! In this exciting novel study, students will journey alongside Percy Jackson as he discovers his true identity, faces powerful challenges, and learns what it really means to be brave. Using Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, we’ll explore not only the thrilling adventures and Greek mythology that fill Percy’s world, but also the important social-emotional lessons woven throughout his story.
Through reading, discussion, and creative activities, students will:
Build self-awareness by exploring how Percy handles feelings of difference, frustration, and courage.
Strengthen empathy by understanding the perspectives of Percy’s friends and even his foes.
Practice relationship skills and teamwork as they collaborate on group projects and myth-inspired challenges.
Reflect on perseverance, loyalty, and identity—what makes a true hero in both myth and real life.
Along the way, students will dive into Greek myths, uncover the stories behind the gods and monsters Percy encounters, and even create their own mythological characters or quests.
This class balances deep emotional reflection with laughter, adventure, and imagination—perfect for young readers ready to discover the hero within themselves.
Each week, we’ll read select passages together in class and engage in lively discussions and activities.
Students should also expect to read assigned chapters at home to keep up with our pace.
