Collage into Mosaics

Explore the creative possibilities of combining collage and mosaic in a single artwork. Using cut paper, found imagery, mosaic materials, and mixed media, participants will experiment with layering, arranging, and combining materials to create unique, textured compositions. This class encourages playful experimentation and offers an opportunity to discover how collage and mosaic can complement and transform one another. Perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike.
What You Will Learn:
- Techniques for combining collage, mosaic, and mixed media within a single artwork
- How to layer and arrange a variety of materials to create texture and visual interest
- Approaches to working with color, shape, pattern, and imagery across different mediums
- Techniques for cutting, assembling, and adhering collage and mosaic materials
- Strategies for experimentation and developing a personal creative process

- Most materials are included in the studio fee. Any additional materials will be discussed by the instructor during the first class.
Some collage materials you might like to bring are:
- Scissors and/or craft knife (X-Acto)
- Glue stick and/or matte gel medium
- Small selection of magazines, newspapers, or photocopied imagery for collage
- Acrylic paint (a few colors of your choice)
Optional:
- Personal ephemera (letters, tickets, photographs, fabric scraps)
Amira Barnes
Amira is a collage artist, painter, and printmaker. Her work serves as an attempt to navigate growth, grief, and joy while centering her experiences as a black woman. My teaching practice involves experimentation and intuitive making with mosaics, painting, and collage.
