Printmaking: 12 Hour Etching Marathon (1 Day)

Discover the techniques of copper etching in this hands-on printmaking workshop. Using traditional methods and materials, students will learn the process of creating imagery using both line etching and aquatints. After taking this workshop, you will know how to prepare a copper plate, apply grounds, etch using ferric chloride, build tonal development, and learn the process of inking and printing. This workshop is suitable for beginners and advanced printers alike.
What You Will Learn:
- Prepare a copper plate for etching and printing
- Transfer and draw an image using hard ground
- Etch a copper plate using Ferric chloride
- Ink and print an etching using oil-based inks
- Apply and etch aquatint for tonal values
- Produce a finished print using both etching and aquatint techniques
Who This Class Is For:
Beginners and experienced printmakers interested in copper etching and aquatint. Students should be excited to start the day with demonstrations and technique-sharing before diving into hands-on printing. Questions about whether this class is right for you? Email adulteducation@fleisher.org.
- Sketch book (any size) and pencils - please bring any ideas/sketches you might have for printing at the workshop, traceables and reference materials will also be available
- Copper plate (4” x 6” recommended)
- At least one sheet of Rives BFK 22” x 30”
- Feel free to bring an already etched copper plate to expand on
Jackson Kramer
Jackson Kramer is a Philadelphia-based artist, whose practice revolves around printmaking and drawing. He received a BFA in printmaking from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Currently Jackson operates as the studio technician for the Works on Paper building at Fleisher Art Memorial. In 2020 he co-founded Who Press’d Press, a print shop specializing in limited edition artist books, prints, and multiples.
