Mixed Media Painting: Independent Projects (Tuesday)

Develop your own mixed media painting projects in this experimental, student-directed course. Explore a variety of drawing, painting, collage, and mixed media techniques as you discover new ways to bring your ideas and artistic vision to life. Students will be introduced to a range of materials and methods, then encouraged to follow their own creative path with guidance and feedback from the instructor. Think beyond the traditional flat canvas as you experiment with layering, combining, and transforming 2D materials into expansive mixed media works that can go wherever your imagination takes them.
What You Will Learn:
- A variety of drawing, painting, collage, and mixed media techniques and materials
- How to select and combine materials and methods to support your individual projects
- Approaches to layering, integrating, and transforming diverse 2D materials
- How to develop and refine self-directed projects with guidance and feedback from the instructor
- Ways to think beyond the traditional flat canvas and explore its possibilities as an expansive space
Who This Class Is For:

For the first session, please bring a sketchbook and something to write/draw with.
Additional materials will be discussed after the first session. Materials may include:
- Canvases
- Palette knives
- Reusable cups for painting/gluing/rinsing (yogurt cups, jars) SAVE YOUR RECYCLED ITEMS FOR THIS!
- Assorted basic watercolor & acrylic paint brush sets: flat, round, bristle, soft fine point, house painting (you want a variety of different tips and sizes of brushes to experiment with)
- White eraser
- Scissors
- Watercolor set
- Sharpies, assorted tips
- Modgepodge glue (matte)
- Xacto knife
- Basic Acrylic Paint Set containing the following colors: Titanium White, Mars Black, Cadmium Red Medium Hue, Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, Ultramarine Blue and Phthalo Green. 120ml (4oz) tubes recommended
- Assorted pens, markers and drawing pencils and tools (feel free to use what you already have)
- Palette paper or wax paper
- Access to materials to collage with (fabrics, textiles, newspapers, magazines, etc.)

Emilio Maldonado
Emilio Maldonado is a Dominican-Puerto Rican artist living in Philadelphia. Received an MFA from Savannah college of Art and Design, A BFA from Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico and an AAS from Escuela de Diseño Altos de Chavón in the Dominican Republic. Has been featured in group shows both locally and abroad including the Santo Domingo 23rd Modern Art Museum Biennial (2013), Saint Louis Fashion Week, Philly Fashion week, Vox Populi’s Make/Shift exhibition, as well as multiple group and solo shows throughout Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the United States. He has been a resident artist at Elsewhere Residency in Greensboro, NC (2013) and Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Philadelphia, PA (2020). In 2021, he was named part of the 2nd cohort of the Mural Arts grant for Philadelphia black Artists and as one of the 20 emerging black artists to watch by the Philadelphia Inquirer .He is also a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Philadelphia, where he lives since 2017.
