Etching for Watercolor
Adult Class | Available
In this combined printmaking and painting class, learn the basics of drypoint etching and watercolor while working on a cohesive mixed-media project. Join this beginner-friendly class to learn how to drypoint etch (hand-scratch) a drawing into a plexiglass plate. Then, use Fleisher's presses to create a small print edition (multiple copies of the same image). Finally, use watercolor to individualize your prints with different applications of hand-painted color. You'll finish the class with a series of unique pieces of artwork, all with the same underlying etching.
Please note: There is no class scheduled for 1/18 (MLK Day) and 2/15 (Presidents' Day).
Required materials for the first class:
- 1 piece of plexiglass, 6"x8" or larger. You can purchase this, or bring a piece of plexiglass from an old picture frame or other source.
- 1 to 3 reference images or ideas for what you would like to etch.
Required materials that can be purchased Week 2 or later:
- 1 full sheet piece of BFK Rives printmaking paper, 22" x 30." The 250 or 280 gsm weight are both ok. Choose your preferred color (white, cream, off-white...).
- A small (9" x 12" is good) pad of newsprint or other inexpensive paper for test printing.
OPTIONAL additional materials. None of these are needed for week 1:
- A smock or apron to protect your clothing.
- Your own etching needle, if you want to work on your plate at home. Needles will be provided for in-class work.
- Akua intaglio printmaking ink (beyond the provided colors). Not needed for week 1.
Your own watercolor paints (if you want to paint outside of class). A small set of watercolors will be provided for in-class work. Specific recommendations will be given during the first week.
