This online art appreciation course surveys the progression of art movements that have directly engaged with the earth. These art forms explore the connection between humans, the land, and the environment. Students will be introduced to monumental earthworks beginning in the late 1960s, followed by the investigations of ecological/environmental art, leading up to a wide range of contemporary works that address the immediate threats of climate change. Artists and artworks will be presented through slide and video presentations, lectures, readings, and group discussions. Weekly creative prompts will be offered to allow students to experiment with processes, materials, and concepts related to the course. Participants will gain an understanding of the trajectory of the Land Art and Environmental Art movements with the intention of sharing a reverence for the natural world.
