As we work, we’ll discuss the fundamentals of natural dyeing, including fiber preparation, plant selection, and the unique qualities of plant dyes. You’ll leave the workshop with a plant-dyed bandana of your own design and a deeper understanding of sustainable textile art. Laura Hricko
Laura Hricko is a textile artist, educator, and lifelong Philadelphian. Her practice spans multiple fiber art techniques, including quilting, mending, embroidery, and textile surface design. She strives to be a steward of traditional textile practices, and is guided by a deep curiosity about the historical and social significance of both materials and the processes she uses to transform them. In recent years, Laura has immersed herself in natural dyeing, using these ancient craft techniques to coax color from homegrown flowers, foraged plants, and food-waste materials. As a teaching artist, Laura creates hands-on natural dye experiences that invite students to reconsider their relationship with textiles, the natural world, and consumption, while discovering the art that can be created in collaboration with nature.
