Explore the fundamentals of visual design through the creative and accessible medium of collage. Using cut paper, found imagery, and mixed materials, participants will learn key design principles while creating original collage compositions. Perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike.

What You Will Learn:
- The elements and principles of design, including balance, contrast, emphasis, rhythm, and unity
- Techniques for selecting, arranging, and combining imagery to create compelling compositions
- How color, shape, texture, and space influence visual communication
- Strategies for developing a personal creative process through collage

Please note: There is no class scheduled for 9/21 (Yom Kippur) or 10/12 (Indigenous Peoples' Day).

  • - Scissors and/or craft knife (X-Acto)
    - Glue stick and/or matte gel medium
    - Small selection of magazines, newspapers, or photocopied imagery for collage
    - A few sheets of lightweight printmaking or mixed media paper (9x12 or larger)
    - Acrylic paint (a few colors of your choice)

    Optional:
    - Personal ephemera (letters, tickets, photographs, fabric scraps)
Amira Barnes

Amira is a collage artist, painter, and printmaker. Her work serves as an attempt to navigate growth, grief, and joy while centering her experiences as a black woman. My teaching practice involves experimentation and intuitive making with mosaics, painting, and collage.
