Machine Sewing Immersive: 1 Quilt, 5 Days

In this immersive 5-day sewing workshop, students will design and construct a complete quilt from start to finish using the sewing machine. Participants will learn the fundamentals of quilting, including piecing, layout, quilting techniques, and binding, while developing confidence with accurate cutting, sewing, and assembly. This class is ideal for beginners with basic sewing experience as well as students looking to complete a full quilting project in a supportive, focused environment.
Some machine sewing experience is recommended. Those who have completed Fleisher's Machine Sewing course are well suited for this immersive. Please contact adulteducation@fleisher.org with questions.
What You Will Learn:- How to prepare fabrics for a quilt - Techniques for accurate cutting and piecing of quilt blocks - Fundamentals of quilt design and layout - Confident use of a sewing machine for quilting - Step-by-step construction of a complete small quilt - Tips for finishing and presenting your quilt
Class Schedule: Class meets daily, Monday, 12/7/2026 through Friday, 12/11/2026 from 10am to 1pm.
Open Studio: Open studio is available daily, Monday 12/7/2026 through Friday, 12/11/2026 from 1pm to 4pm.
- Notebook and writing utensils for notes
- Pencils
- Clear gridded ruler or quilting ruler
- Seam ripper
- Spool of thread
- Bobbins (that fit a Singer Heavy Duty Machine)
- Fabric scissors
- Paper scissors
- Quilting pins
- Sewing clips
- 2 contrasting solid color quilting cotton fabrics, 1 yard each

Martina Taylor
Martina Taylor is a textile artist and educator from Boston, now living in Philadelphia. She creates art quilts that explore connections between urban landscapes, place, and memory by combining screen print and image transfer processes with surface design techniques. Martina holds a BA in Studio Art from Oberlin College.
Prior to moving to Philly in 2024, Martina co-founded Arom Gallery, a pop-up art gallery with a three month residency in Budapest, Hungary. In Fall 2025, she completed a residency in the Apprentice Training Program at the Fabric Workshop and Museum, where she designed and produced two sets of large scale repeat pattern screen printed yardage. Martina teaches fiber arts classes at Fleisher and Philly Art Center.
