Making Books by Hand (4 sessions)

Adult Class | Registration opens Monday, July 6, 2026 8:00 AM EDT

In this class, we will explore some traditional bookbinding structures using some modern materials and techniques. This is a great class for a quick introduction into the world of making books. You will learn some basic binding techniques using traditional tools and materials. Through demonstrations & guided instruction, students will work through multiple projects throughout the class.

What You Will Learn: 
- The basic hand skills of cutting, folding and sewing various materials
- Different papers and other materials used in bookbinding
- Several different types of bindings
- Sources for materials, tools, and instructional guidance for future learning

  • Here are the personal tools and supplies you will need. You will need everything to participate in the first week of class, so please feel free to e-mail adulteducation@fleisher.org with questions.

    - Pencil
    - White eraser
    - Metal ruler
    - Scissors
    - Olfa cutting knife or X-acto with extra blades
    - Bone folder
    - Awl or thin needle tool (as used for clay)
    - Self-healing Cutting Mat
    - Binder Clips - At least 2 medium sized
    - Triangle (not 100% necessary, but it can really help)
    - Decorative paper –If you have some, feel free to bring it to use.
