Mending and Visible Repair (five sessions)

Discover the art of mending through traditional and creative techniques in this 5-session class. Learn visible repair methods including Sashiko stitching, patching, darning, and decorative embroidery to extend the life of your clothing while adding unique, personal touches. Perfect for beginners and seasoned stitchers alike. Please bring your worn garments or projects and give them new life with beauty and intention.
What You Will Learn:
- Hand stitching techniques for visible repair, such as Sashiko stitching and embroidery
- Patching and darning techniques for repairing holes in garments
- The ethos of mending and repairing for extending the life of clothing and other textiles
- - Scissors (fabric scissors and small embroidery scissors) - a few pairs will be available in the studio
- Embroidery needles (variety of sizes, including sharp and blunt)
- Sashiko needles (long, strong needles ideal for dense fabrics)
- Embroidery floss or perle cotton Sashiko thread (optional but ideal for traditional Sashiko)
- Darning thread or yarn (wool, cotton, or synthetic to match garments)
- Thimble (especially useful for Sashiko stitching)
- Pins and safety pins
- Seam ripper
- Scrap fabric (cotton, denim, linen—variety of textures and colors for patching)
- Embroidery hoops (for stability during embroidery or darning)
- Garments to mend
Andrea Arts
Andrea Arts is a Philadelphia based artist originally from the Midwest. She received her BA in studio art from The College of Wooster and is currently an MFA candidate in fibers and material studies at Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Working across disciplines, Andrea is currently exploring ideas of truth, artifice, power, and clowns through the lens of Shakespeare.
