Darkroom: Lith Printing (4 Sessions)

Adult Class | Available

Explore the experimental process of lith printing in this hands-on workshop. Using alternate darkroom chemistry and older photographic paper, lith printing produces unique, unpredictable results ranging from high contrast and rich grain to unexpected tones, vignetting, and textured highlights. Students will learn the process of printing from a negative with an enlarger, with guidance tailored to individual creative goals and image-making approaches. This workshop includes one-on-one instruction and a brief refresher on basic darkroom printing techniques. Students should be prepared for experimental outcomes and variation from print to print. Note: This class uses photographic negatives, not digital images printed from a phone.

What You Will Learn:
-
Technical overview of the alternative darkroom print developing technique–lith bromide printing–and the range of its aesthetic results

- Basic refresher of how to print images in the darkrooom
- How to manipulate contrast and and control tonality in lith printing
- Experimenting with negative and paper selections to dramatically impact lith printing results
