Digital Photography: The Camera

Adult Class | Available

This course covers the fundamentals of digital photography, including camera operation, exposure, composition, and visual storytelling. Alongside the technical aspects of photography, students will explore design principles and learn how to discuss and evaluate photographs through weekly critiques of class work and examples from the history of the medium.

Classes combine discussions, presentations, and hands-on photography both in the classroom and outdoors in the neighborhood around Fleisher. Depending on the interests and progress of the class, an optional field trip may also be scheduled.

What You Will Learn
- Master the fundamentals of camera settings, including aperture, shutter speed, and ISO

- Understand digital imaging, composition, and available light
- Build confidence creating, discussing, and evaluating photographs

  • Please bring the following supplies to the first class:
    - A digital SLR (DSLR), mirrorless camera, or point-and-shoot camera with manual controls. Most camera types are welcome, but a camera with an interchangeable lens is recommended to take full advantage of the techniques covered in class. Camera recommendations will be discussed during the first session.
    - Please bring an external flash or hard drive to class or be prepared to save your work on a cloud-based storage alternative. Fleisher's computers are shared tools and the hard drives are cleared regularly to keep them in good working condition.
    - Memory card
    - External hard drive or flash drive, or a cloud-based storage solution for saving your work.
