Mosaics: Introduction

Adult Class | Registration opens Monday, July 6, 2026 8:00 AM EDT

This is your introduction to the techniques, history, and aesthetic context of decorative and functional mosaics. This class focuses on developing a strong foundation in mosaic skills, understanding of appropriate material choices and color theory. Among the mosaic materials you may use are stone, ceramic, and glass. The emphasis will be on design, pattern, construction, and finished presentation. Your instructor will provide lots of useful information about historical and contemporary mosaic works, along with where to source materials and specialized tools, for your specific projects. Students in this all-levels class will work on a project of their own choice with guidance from the instructor.

What You Will Learn:
- Techniques for cutting, placing, and adhering mosaic materials
- Principles of design, pattern, and composition
- Approaches to decorative and functional mosaic work
- Methods for finishing and presenting mosaic pieces
- Strategies for sourcing mosaic materials and tools

Please note: There is no class scheduled for 9/21 (Yom Kippur) or 10/12 (Indigenous Peoples' Day).

  • - Sketchbook/notebook recommended
    - Dust mask
    - Safety goggles (for those who don’t wear glasses)
    - Gloves (nitrile or latex)

Veronica Kairos

Veronica Kairos is a multi-media artist drawing from disciplines such as photography, sculpture, fabric arts, metals and fused glass with a special affinity for mosaics. Her mosaic portraits have been sought after for public art commissions and galleries. Her teaching style focuses on foundational skills while providing individual attention to unleash each student's creativity.
