Mixed Media Painting

In this course students will use various drawing and painting techniques, and a cut-and-paste collage mentality to create a series of mixed media work. Students will discover contemporary methods for layering 2D materials and mediums to create an individual series of self-directed mixed media paintings.

What You Will Learn: 
- Techniques for working with found, collected, and appropriated art materials
- How to create a coherent mixed media painting series using a variety of 2D materials
- How to layer, integrate, and combine various drawing, painting, and collage techniques

  • - 3 canvases of any size - they do not all need to be the same size, should be no larger than 18" x 24" 
    - 2 palette knives
    - Reusable cups for painting/gluing/rinsing (yogurt cups, jars), items from your recycling are great!
    - Assorted basic watercolor & acrylic paint brush sets: flat, round, bristle, soft fine point, house painting (you want a variety of different tips and sizes of brushes to experiment with)
    - White eraser
    - Scissors
    - Watercolor set
    - Sharpies, assorted tips
    - Modgepodge glue (matte) at least 8oz.
    - X-acto knife
    - Basic Acrylic Paint Set containing the following colors: Titanium White, Mars Black, Cadmium Red Medium Hue, Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, Ultramarine Blue and Phthalo Green. 120ml (4oz) tubes recommended
    - Assorted pens, markers and drawing pencils and tools (feel free to use what you already have)
    - Palette paper or wax paper
    - Access to materials to collage with (fabrics, textiles, newspapers, magazines, etc.)

Danielle Cartier

Danielle Cartier is an artist known for large-scale murals and mixed media paintings that incorporate reconstructed materials, ephemera, and layered printmaking and painting processes. Born and raised in Northern California, she earned a BFA from Sonoma State University (2014) and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studio Practice from the University of Pennsylvania (2017). Her work has been exhibited widely in solo and group shows across the United States. Cartier has taught studio art at numerous universities and community art centers and currently teaches at Rowan University, Stockton University, Fleisher Art Memorial, and Perkins Center for the Arts. Since 2017, she has completed over fifty grant-funded public murals throughout South Jersey and continues to develop new public art projects. In 2024, she opened DC Gallery & Studio, a female artist-owned gallery and studio in the Glasstown Arts District of Millville, New Jersey.
