Ceramics: Wheel Throwing & Surface Decoration Immersive

This immersive will focus on a variety of painterly surface decorations applied to wheel thrown vessels. Week one fill focus on wheel throwing techniques. The second week will be a deep dive into glazing and surface decoration. This immersive is a great way to spend dedicated time learning and enhancing new skills. 

What you will learn:
- To enhance their wheel throwing techniques
- To create functional finished pots using trimming, handle-making, additive and reductive decoration.
- To use different surface decoration techniques (such as sgraffito) with both glaze and underglaze on greenware and bisqueware to finish your wheel thrown vessels. 
- To articulate their personal taste and vision, and use this to plan and execute pots they will enjoy using


Class and Open Studio Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8/3-8/7: Class 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Open Studio: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Monday - Friday, 8/10-8/14: Class 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Open Studio: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Firing Schedule:
All work intended for a bisque firing should be placed in the dry box by 4 PM on Thursday, 8/6 to guarantee it will be fired for the second week of class. All finished work should be placed on on the glaze firing shelf by Friday, 8/14. Finished work can be picked up during Fleisher's operational hours in the fall term, starting Tuesday, 9/8.

Students in this immersive are welcome to visit Open Studio Hours in September to complete glazing any unfinished work. We will store unclaimed work for one term only. Questions about the firing schedule can be directed to Scott Cooper, Senior Studio Technician, at scooper@fleisher.org.

Accessibility Note: This studio is accessible by elevator, but some auxiliary areas require stairs. For access needs or accommodations, contact adulteducation@fleisher.org.

  • - 25lbs of earthenware clay is included in your registration - no outside clay is permitted (prolific students may purchase additional clay from Fleisher)
    - Basic pottery tool kit: cutting wire, sponge, wooden knife, needle tool, wooden rib, metal rib, large and small trimming loops
    - Sketchbook and drawing tool
    - One or more small towels (dish size is good)

    - Clothes and shoes you are comfortable getting dirty
    - A variety of cheap paint brushes
    - Sgraffito tool (optional)
    - Apron (optional)
    - Hand lotion/salve (optional but recommended)

    Note: Students will have access to a variety of decals and underglaze pencils and pastels to explore as surface decoration.

Raelis Vasquez

Raelis Vasquez is a visual artist born in the Dominican Republic and based in New York City. He received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018. Raelis has exhibited at El Museo Del Barrio, NY; Kunstraum Potsdam; Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, Los Angeles; amongst others. He is in the permanent collection at Pe“rez Art Museum Miami and numerous private collections.
