Jewelry: Fabrication

Explore the fundamentals of jewelry fabrication with a focus on design! This course will cover jewelry making techniques such as pattern making, basic metal forming, advanced soldering, and basic cabochon stone setting. This class will include demonstrations in advanced soldering operations, silver soldering operations, and cabochon bezel settings. Student artists will use these skills to create objects such as hollow form pendants, bezel set ring, earrings, or pendants, or basic cuff bracelets. Advanced students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own projects. The instructor will also provide plenty of individual feedback and additional demos in response to student projects. As the demonstrations and techniques are more advanced in this course, it is necessary that students have taken an Introduction to Jewelry class prior to enrolling in this course.
What you will learn:- Learn and improve your soldering skills- Fabricating and fitting parts and pieces together- Understanding of mechanical properties of locking systems and fabricating of findings- Learn and improve your level of metal forming both hollow and forging- Introduction to stone setting- Introduction of working in wax, carving, and building in hard and soft waxesAccessibility Note: This studio is only accessible by stairs. Sarah Montagnoli
Sarah Montagnoli is a jeweler, metalsmith, and educator based in Philadelphia, PA. She received her BFA from Moore College of Art & Design (2018) and moved on to pursue her MFA and Teaching Certification at Tyler School of Art & Architecture (2021). Since receiving her Masters, she has been teaching jewelry at Tyler School of Art & Architecture, Rowan University, Alloy Atelier, and Fleisher Art Memorial. Montagnoli creates whimsical jewelry objects, often mimicking toys or imaginary creatures, as well as dreamy earrings, rings, and pins in her production work. When not teaching or seated at her bench, she enjoys time with her cats, collecting small trinkets, and wandering in the rain.
