Digital Photography: The Image (4 Day)

Ready to take your photography to the next level? Review the basics of the digital camera functions and dive into the art of creating a photographic image. This workshop will take you beyond photography basics to explore advanced photographic techniques and strategies for creating compelling photographs. The workshop focuses on light and composition, featuring a mix of discussions, presentations, review of student images, and photo walks. Students should have consistent access to a camera for the duration of the course and are highly encouraged to spend time outside of class photographing assignments to practice the skills covered each day. Most camera styles are welcome, though a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera with an interchangeable lens is recommended to take full advantage of the techniques covered. Students should have access to an editing software like Lightroom, Bridge/Photoshop or Mac Photo applications to process and resize images and upload to a Google folder created by the instructor.
What you will learn:
- Develop a greater mastery of basic photo concepts including: Equivalent Exposures; Depth of Field Control; Effects of Focal Length; Shooting Modes; and Focus Controls.
- Develop a greater understanding of digital imaging concepts.
- Develop a stronger ability to recognize compositional elements and how to apply them purposefully.
- Learn how to recognize and develop subtle qualities of light, how it changes constantly, how it can be manipulated, and how to use it effectively in photography

- For the first class, please bring:
- Digital Camera (All digital cameras are welcome: compact point-and-shoot, the new mirrorless cameras, and SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras)
- Memory card for digital camera
- Portable hard drive for securing and saving digital files
- Tripod (not required, but suggested)
Lianne Milton
Lianne Milton (she/her) is a documentary photographer and educator whose work investigates environmental issues, human rights, and cultural narratives. For two decades, Lianne was an assignment photographer throughout Latin America and Southeast Asia, including Brazil where her work brought global attention to the Zika crisis and security issues in the favelas. Lianne is an adjunct professor of photography in Philadelphia, and continues her longform projects in Brazil.
