Non-Toxic Printmaking: Drypoint and Silk-Aquatint

Explore two intaglio print processes that resemble etching and aquatint but without the use of solvents. Through demonstrations and hands on experience you will create line and painterly textural/tonal imagery to express your ideas. The class will cover all areas of printing and editioning including paper preparation, ink mixing and application, use of a press, registration, chine colle, and adding monotype techniques to a print.
What You Will Learn:
- Knowledge of the history and contemporary practice of non-toxic printmaking
- Various traditional and contemporary techniques in printmaking minus the solvents
- Editioning a print series
- Image making via line, mark making, and color.
- Two 16 gauge plexiglass plates either 5"×7" or 6"x 8"
- Newsprint pad (9"x12" or 14"x17")
- Paper - four sheets of 22"x30" Rives BFK paper
- 2H pencil

Elaine Erne, co-founder and co-director of Star Wheel Printers, received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA and her MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Erne’s drawings and prints have been featured in numerous invitational and juried national exhibitions.
