Have you always wanted to make a quilt but didn’t know where to start? This multi-week class is designed for true beginners and guides students through the quilting process step by step, from fabric selection to a finished quilt top. Each week, you’ll build new skills while exploring the fundamentals of quilting, including choosing and preparing fabrics, accurate cutting, piecing quilt blocks, designing layouts, and confidently using a sewing machine. By the end of the course, you will complete a small 10”x18” sampler quilt made from different quilt blocks and techniques covered in class.

What you will learn:
- How to select and prepare fabrics for a quilt
- Techniques for accurate cutting and piecing of quilt blocks
- Fundamentals of quilt design and layout
- Confident use of a sewing machine for quilting
- Step-by-step construction of a quilt
- Tips for finishing and presenting your quilt

  • - Notebook and writing utensils for notes
    - Clear gridded quilting ruler (3” x18” is a good size)
    - Seam ripper
    - Thread
    - Fabric and paper scissors
    - 2-4 1 yard pieces of complementary colored quilting cotton 
    - Straight pins
    - Frixion erasable pens or tailor’s chalk
    - Snips or embroidery scissors
    - Glue stick
    - Batting 
    - Double fold bias tape
Martina Taylor

Martina Taylor is a textile artist and educator from Boston, now living in Philadelphia. She creates art quilts that explore connections between urban landscapes, place, and memory by combining screen print and image transfer processes with surface design techniques. Martina holds a BA in Studio Art from Oberlin College.

Prior to moving to Philly in 2024, Martina co-founded Arom Gallery, a pop-up art gallery with a three month residency in Budapest, Hungary. In Fall 2025, she completed a residency in the Apprentice Training Program at the Fabric Workshop and Museum, where she designed and produced two sets of large scale repeat pattern screen printed yardage. Martina teaches fiber arts classes at Fleisher and Philly Art Center.
