Mosaic Portraiture (5 Day)

Learn to create a realistic portrait using the ancient art of mosaic. The instructor will guide you through the process of creating a one-of-a-kind mosaic portrait based upon a student-provided photo . Special emphasis will be placed on the effective use of tonal values and Andamento (mosaic flow) in the creation of a realistic image.
Although this course is suitable for beginner through experienced, students must be able to cut and shape glass using basic mosaic handtools. Students will be required to submit a full-face photo of the desired subject to instructor approximately one week prior to start of class.
- Small functional object to mosaic (e.g., a flowerpot, tray, mirror frame, box, stool
- Personal materials to incorporate such as dishes, old tiles, beads, buttons, costume jewelry, small stones or shells, glass pieces or mirror fragments
- Sketchbook or notebook for design ideas
- Apron or clothes you don’t mind getting messy
- Optional: dust mask, gloves (for grouting), rags or sponges
