Basic Drawing (Tuition Free)

Adult Tuition-Free Class | Available (Membership Required)

This beginner-friendly course is designed for individuals with no prior drawing experience. Students will be guided step-by-step through the fundamental principles of drawing, beginning with the use of line and tone. Each class session builds on the last, encouraging gradual skill development, increased confidence, and fluency in visual expression. Through a combination of exercises, including drawing from imagination, copying masterworks, and drawing from direct observation. Students will begin to develop a foundational visual vocabulary and a deeper understanding of how to "see" like an artist. The primary drawing medium will be pencil, with additional instruction in charcoal and pen. The course emphasizes hands-on practice, supportive feedback, and skill-building in a creative, welcoming environment.

What You'll Learn:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic drawing concepts, including line, tone, proportion, and composition.
  • Apply observational drawing techniques.
  • Explore a range of drawing media, including pencil, charcoal, and pen
  • Develop visual thinking and expressive skills through exercises in imagination, copying, and observational practice.

Please Note: Class will not meet on Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day.

    • Kneaded eraser

    • Prismacolor Colored Pencils (box of 24 pencils)
    • General’s Charcoal Pencils box of 4: Soft, Medium, Hard + White
    • Black Sharpie Ultra Fine Point
    • Mechanical eraser like: Tombow Knock Mono 3.8 mm

Emily Stroud

Emily Stroud is an artist from the American South who currently lives and works out of Philadelphia, PA. She received her Masters degree from the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art in 2023 and her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2018. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and institutions throughout th e United States, such as the Peale Museum, Automat Gallery, Blah Blah Gallery, and The Wiregrass Museum of Art. Her works have been published in the notable art publications New American Paintings and ArtMazeMag. She teaches painting at Rowan University and Fleisher Art Memorial.
