2D Design Fundamentals (Tuition Free)

Adult Tuition-Free Class | Registration opens Tuesday, February 17, 2026 8:00 AM EST

This 2D class introduces students to the fundamentals of two dimensional art through hands on exploration and creative problem solving. Using drawing, collage, painting, and mixed media, students will investigate how images are built on a flat surface. The course emphasizes process, experimentation, and visual thinking while developing technical skills and personal voice. No prior experience is required.

What You Will Learn
- Core principles of two dimensional design, including line, shape, value, texture, space, and color
- How to organize visual elements using composition and design strategies
- Introduction to collage and mixed media processes
- Strategies for visual problem solving and creative decision making
- How to discuss and critique artwork using visual language

  • Start the term with these supplies:
    • Pencils
    • 14" X 17" Drawing pad (80lb.)
    • Charcoal (med/soft)
    • Eraser

    Midway through the term students will need:
    • Paper palette and palette knife
    • Several sizes of flat head and round head brushes
    • Stretched canvas (sizes will be discussed in class)
    • Oil paint or Acrylic paint of your choice in the following colors: a large tube of white paint, and regular size tubes of cadmium red, primary yellow and primary blue, burnt umber, burnt sienna and violet (purple)

    Materials will be discussed during Week 1. Students are encouraged to bring what they already have, and recommendations will be provided after the first class.

Emilio Maldonado

Emilio Maldonado is a Dominican-Puerto Rican artist living in Philadelphia. Received an MFA from Savannah college of Art and Design, A BFA from Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico and an AAS from Escuela de Diseño Altos de Chavón in the Dominican Republic. Has been featured in group shows both locally and abroad including the Santo Domingo 23rd Modern Art Museum Biennial (2013), Saint Louis Fashion Week, Philly Fashion week, Vox Populi’s Make/Shift exhibition, as well as multiple group and solo shows throughout Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the United States. He has been a resident artist at Elsewhere Residency in Greensboro, NC (2013) and Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Philadelphia, PA (2020). In 2021, he was named part of the 2nd cohort of the Mural Arts grant for Philadelphia black Artists and as one of the 20 emerging black artists to watch by the Philadelphia inquirer .He is also a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Philadelphia, where he lives since 2017.
