Expressive Drawing: Sketch to Ink

This expressive drawing class invites students to explore drawing as both a process and a form of personal expression. Through guided exercises and open-ended projects, students will develop images from quick sketches to more refined compositions, learning how ideas evolve on the page. Emphasis will be placed on working with ink, exploring line quality, contrast, mark making, and spontaneity, while also experimenting with a variety of drawing tools and surfaces. Students will investigate how different supplies influence mood, movement, and meaning in their work. The class encourages curiosity, risk taking, and individual voice, making it suitable for artists of all experience levels who want to deepen their relationship with drawing and ink based media.

What You Will Learn
- Expressive sketching and observational drawing techniques
- How to develop and refine images from initial ideas to finished work
- Use of ink as a primary medium, including line, texture, and value
- Experimentation with different drawing tools and surfaces
- Strategies for embracing spontaneity, imperfection, and personal style

  • - Sketchbook (9" x 12" or similar)
    - Drawing paper suitable for ink
    - Black waterproof ink (bottled or cartridge)
    - Dip pens and or fountain pens
    - Brushes suitable for ink -
    Assorted drawing tools such as markers or brush pens
    - Paper towels, rags, and a small water container

    All materials will be reviewed and discussed during Week 1, with demonstrations and recommendations provided before students are expected to make purchases.

Emilio Maldonado

Emilio Maldonado is a Dominican-Puerto Rican artist living in Philadelphia. Received an MFA from Savannah college of Art and Design, A BFA from Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico and an AAS from Escuela de Diseño Altos de Chavón in the Dominican Republic. Has been featured in group shows both locally and abroad including the Santo Domingo 23rd Modern Art Museum Biennial (2013), Saint Louis Fashion Week, Philly Fashion week, Vox Populi’s Make/Shift exhibition, as well as multiple group and solo shows throughout Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the United States. He has been a resident artist at Elsewhere Residency in Greensboro, NC (2013) and Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Philadelphia, PA (2020). In 2021, he was named part of the 2nd cohort of the Mural Arts grant for Philadelphia black Artists and as one of the 20 emerging black artists to watch by the Philadelphia inquirer .He is also a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Philadelphia, where he lives since 2017.
