Abstract Drawing: Process & Expression

Adult Class | Registration opens Monday, February 9, 2026 8:00 AM EST

This drawing-based class explores abstraction through gesture, movement, and intuitive mark-making. Emphasizing process over representation, students will investigate how the body, rhythm, and repetition inform abstract drawing. Using charcoal, graphite, ink, and mixed media, participants will work at varying scales to develop expressive lines, layered surfaces, and dynamic compositions. Through guided exercises, prompts, and open studio time, students will experiment with speed, pressure, erasure, and chance, learning to loosen control and respond directly to the act of drawing itself. Historical and contemporary references to abstract and gestural artists will provide context, while group discussions will support reflection and growth.

This class is suitable for all levels and is ideal for artists interested in expanding their drawing practice beyond observation into a more physical, intuitive, and exploratory approach.

What You Will Learn:
- Techniques for creating abstract drawings through gesture and movement
- How to use charcoal, graphite, ink, and mixed media expressively
- Strategies for developing dynamic compositions with layered surfaces and expressive lines
- Methods for exploring speed, pressure, erasure, and chance in mark-making
- How to respond intuitively to the drawing process and loosen control
Please Note: This is a 9 week class; there will be no class on May 7.
