Mosaics: 101 and Independent Study

Adult Class | Available

This session is for both brand new students (or those who want to “go back to the basics”) and experienced ones who want to work on a mosaic project in the planning state or already in progress. The 101 students will acquire a strong foundation in tools, materials and techniques. They will connect to mosaic’s early roots by learning classical andamento (line flow) and explore more contemporary approaches. While 101 students focus on projects, instructor Claire will work with independent students to answer questions, give technical advice and discuss design ideas. It’s the best of both worlds; new students learn from the independent projects and the more experienced students absorb a review of the basics.

What You Will Learn:

  • Techniques for cutting, arranging, and adhering mosaic materials
  • Design strategies for creating balanced and visually engaging compositions
  • Methods for selecting and combining colors, textures, and materials Problem-solving approaches for technical or creative challenges
  • Context and history of mosaic art to inform your work

  • • N95 mask
    • Tools and adhesives provided but there is a limited supply of substrates and materials. Students should plan to bring their own or discuss options with the instructor.
