Handbuilding for Home and Body (five sessions)

Adult Class | Registration opens Monday, October 20, 2025 8:00 AM EDT

In this class we will learn foundational techniques for design and hand-building while creating functional wear for the home and body. The possibilities are expansive! Some examples include soap and body care vessels, jewelry, serving dishes, and more. Each session will include time for instruction, and for practicing the techniques learned in demonstration. Participants will explore the relationship between form and function through the process of making and experimentation.

What you will learn:
1. Basic techniques for hand-building: pinch, soft slab, and hard slab construction; scoring; carving
2. Building forms based on sketches and designs
3. Exploration and experimentation with functional design
4. Glazing and underglaze techniques – with attention to functional objects.

The studio fee is for the use of studio materials, glazing, and firing.

Firing Schedule: All work should be placed on the bisque firing shelf by Friday, February 27, and on the glaze firing shelf by Friday, March 6 to guarantee it will be fired by the last week of classes. Students can continue to drop off work for glaze firing until Friday, March 13. Finished work can be picked up during operational hours between terms, or the following term. We will store unclaimed work for one term only. Questions about the firing schedule can be directed to Scott Cooper, Senior Studio Technician at scooper@fleisher.org.

Please review your class schedule as not all classes meet through the week of March 9-13. All artwork and supplies must be removed from Fleisher’s Ceramics Studio shelving by March 13 unless registered for a Ceramics class during the upcoming Spring 2026 term.

Please note that part of this classroom is accessible by stairs only; please contact Fleisher for more information.
