Drawing the Figure
Adult Class | Registration opens Monday, October 20, 2025 8:00 AM EDT
Designed for artists eager to explore the human form, this course offers a foundational approach to figure drawing. Students will focus on proportion, gesture, and the use of light and shadow to create form. Lessons will include how to observe and depict the direction of light and complexion with nuance and clarity. The class begins with charcoal and progresses to red and white chalks on toned paper, with the instructor demonstrating each new medium as it is introduced. While introductory in nature, the course emphasizes core principles that benefit students at all levels.
What you will learn:
1. The observation and understanding of gesture in all aspects of the figure
2. Learning to see the direction of light in terms of light and shadow patterns
3. Observing the model's complexion as a relationship of skin color, hair color, and eye color
4. Seeing the three qualities of light: light, transition, and shadow
Please note: Class will not meet on Monday, January 19 and Monday, February 16 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. and Presidents' Days.
