Steel Jewelry (five sessions)
Adult Class | Available
Dive into the world of steel in this 5-week workshop. Steel is an affordable material with properties different from metals we typically use in the jewelry studio. Learn how to safely fabricate with steel in a shared studio space and use the qualities of steel to your advantage by sawing, forming, and soldering steel sheet. We’ll discuss the history of steel jewelry, learn about contemporary art jewelers who work with steel, and explore the conceptual landscape of steel’s reputation as an industrial, masculine, hard, and inexpensive material.
Fleisher’s jewelry studio does not typically allow the use of steel, however this class will introduce you to the hazards of equipment wear and cross-contamination so that you can safely work independently with steel after the completion of this workshop.
To get the most out of this course, participants should come with a basic understanding of metalsmithing techniques. Necessary techniques required for this course include: sawing, filing and sanding, using the flex shaft, and some experience silver soldering.
Note that this classroom is accessible by stairs only; please contact Fleisher for more information.
