Exploring Surface Techniques: Sgraffito and Mishima (five-day workshop)

Adult Summer Workshop | Registration opens Monday, May 5, 2025 8:00 AM EDT

Push your ceramics further and learn to decorate your pottery with intricate surface design techniques. In this class we will explore two striking surface decoration techniques—sgraffito and Mishima—used to create bold, graphic, and intricate designs on clay. These methods allow for a range of mark- making from expressive to precise and detailed, perfect for both functional and decorative ceramics. We’ll work on simple forms to practice applying and refining each technique. Each session will include demonstrations, guided practice, and open time for experimentation and development of personal style.

What you will learn:
1. How to prepare clay surfaces for decoration at the leather-hard stage
2. Application of underglaze and slip for sgraffito and mishima
3. Carving techniques for line work, pattern, and image creation
4. Inlay and incising methods for creating contrast and depth
5. Tips for refining your work and finishing for firing
