Jewelry Making (Thursday)

Adult Class | FULL

This all-levels course is designed to focus on a variety of technical processes, design concepts, and tools essential for understanding and working with non-ferrous metals on a wearable scale. Attention will be given to material sourcing, the production and critique of metalwork, and the cultural and historical aspects of jewelry as artistic expression. Some basic techniques that will be covered include sawing, filing, riveting, simple forming, hammer texture, soldering, and finishing. More advanced techniques will be introduced for Intermediate and Advanced level students.

What you will learn:
1. Design concepts as they pertain to wearable and decorative metals
2. Working with specialized tools
3. Basic techniques

    Students will receive a materials list one week prior to class with specific catalog numbers if purchasing supplies online.

    All students should start the term with these supplies:
    • Herkules Saw blades 3/0 – 2 dozen (24 total)
    • Sketchbook and tracing paper
    • Pencil

    For Beginners

    For the first class:
    3” x 3” 20 gauge Copper sheet or Brass sheet
    • Double stick tape
    • 3 inches of 18 guage sterling silver 5mm wide rectangular wire
    • 1 fine silver 6mm bezel cup
    • 1 6mm calibrated cabochon cut gemstone
    • 6 inches each of silver wire solder Hard, Medium, Easy

    Midway through the term beginner students will need these supplies:
    • Cabochon cut stone round or oval in shape and at least 1/2 inch in diameter
    • Fine silver bezel wire 26 gauge x 6mm x 6 inches
    • Sterling silver sheet 22 gauge – 1” X 1”
    • 18 gauge sterling silver sheet 3” x ½ inch

    For Intermediate/Advanced

    Students with intermediate or advanced levels of experience will be designing and producing a project of their own design. Designs will be approved in class and materials needed to complete your project will be discussed. Feel free to contact instructor prior to class about ideas you might have for initial projects.

    (No Nickel or Steel in studio unless previously discussed and Gold at your own expense!) Materials are extremely important to have because without them projects will not be able to be completed.
