Learn how to use traditional Japanese shibori techniques in combination with kitchen scraps to create beautiful, naturally dyed textiles. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the art of resist dyeing using an avocado dye bath. We will cover how to extract dye from avocado pits and skins and create unique patterns on fabric through various folding and binding methods. You will leave the workshop with an avocado dyed bandana of your own design. Get inspired by these ancient craft techniques and humble materials that will lead you to rethink the creative potential of food waste before it hits the compost pile. All materials are provided.

Laura Hricko

Laura Hricko is an artist, educator, and lifelong Philadelphian dedicated to the conviction that art is transformative and capable of enriching the lives of all people. Laura’s artistic practice involves various fiber arts techniques including sewing, quilting, embroidery, and textile surface design. Most recently, Laura has been captivated by the processes of natural dyeing, which allow her to feel a deeper connection with nature and history, as she employs these ancient craft techniques to coax color from homegrown, foraged, and food-waste natural dye sources.
