Land Art from Monumental to Environmental (online, tuition-free)

This online art appreciation course surveys the progression of art movements that have directly engaged and interacted with the earth. These art forms explore the connection between humans, the land, and the environment.Via slide and video presentations, lectures, and group discussions participants will be introduced to the monumental earthworks from the 1960s, the investigations of ecological/environmental art, and a range of contemporary works that address the immediate threats of climate change. Students will gain an understanding of the trajectory of the Land Art and Environmental Art movements with the intention to share a reverence for the natural world.
*An optional in-person art excursion will be offered to accompany the course. Location and date to be determined.
Please note: This is an 8-session class. Class will not meet on Monday, January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and on Monday, February 17 in observance of President's Day.
This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class.
