Introduction to Book Art Structures (five sessions)

Explore a wide variety of non-traditional book structures ranging from single sheet books to glued and sewn books. You will gain a solid foundation in basic binding techniques as well as comfort with various tools and materials to make your own beautiful books! We will make a variety of dynamic book structures that are works of art in themselves.
What you will learn:
1. You will learn the basic hand skills of cutting, folding, and gluing various materials.
2. You will learn about different finishing possibilities — cover options, cover materials choices, thread choices, etc.
3. You will learn several different types of bindings that allow for a wide range of material and aesthetic choices.
4. Sources for materials, tools, and instructional guidance for future learning
Your studio fee includes many of the expendable supplies. There are some tools and supplies you will need, see below.
Start the term with these supplies:
• Pencil
• White eraser
• Metal ruler
• Scissors
• Olfa cutting knife or X-acto with extra blades
• Bone folder
• Self-healing Cutting Mat
• Binder clips – at least two medium-sized
• Glue stick or Double stick tape
• Triangle (not 100% necessary, but it can really help)
Recommended Supplies (this is where you can make the most artistic choices):
• Cardstock- get colors or patterns will add to the dynamics of your books
• Any special decorative paper you'd like to use
• Any collage materials you'd like to use
