This course covers the basics of mosaics. Beginning with an historical overview of this ancient art form, students acquire a strong foundation in tools, materials and techniques. There is a focus on andamento, the fluid, undulating lines that widen and narrow to a beautiful effect. By learning the fundamentals of this classical “language,” students connect to mosaic’s early roots. We view many Roman and Byzantine examples then look at contemporary works in order to see how the classical approach (often in combination with modern techniques) is used today. Participants create at a few small pieces that explore all of these concepts and skills. More advanced techniques and materials are also introduced.
