Heddle Carving and Weaving (three-day workshop)
Adult Workshop | Available
In this workshop, students will explore the art and craft of weaving using a rigid heddle backstrap loom. This workshop will guide participants through the process of hand carving their own rigid heddles. With these custom heddles, students will explore various weaving techniques, focusing on band-weaving, warp-faced rep weave, and balanced weave—essential techniques for creating both decorative bands and fabric. This offering is designed to introduce students to carving their own weaving tools and provide a solid foundation for further exploration in weaving.
What you will learn:
1. Carving safety and overview of techniques used to carve wood.
2. How to carve a small heddle for weaving.
3. How to use the heddle for band weaving and balance weave.
For the first class bring these supplies:
• FlexCut KN12 Cutting Knife
• Pencil
• Eraser
• Ruler with centimeters and inches on it
• Sandpaper: 80, 150, 220 (I will have some as well)
• Optional: Cut resistant gloves (only get small if your hands are really tiny). There are lots of options for cutting gloves you don't have to get these - this is just what I have.
