Abstract and Intuitive Painting

Adult Class | This program is completed

This class will let students explore basic color techniques in abstract painting as it relates to direct observation along with visual ideas that derive from intuitive inspiration. The class comes with a variety of painting prompts that ask for intuitive responses from students (painting to music, painting by extracting color from the surrounding, etc.). Students will learn how to develop a curious and reflexive painting language regardless of skill levels. The principles of composition, color theory, brush and palette knife techniques will be reiterated throughout the course. This class is open to students of all levels. Instructor feedback will be provided for each class.

What you will learn:
1. Basic color theory and color mixing techniques
2. Brush and palette knife techniques
3. How to work with oil paint
4. How to paint as a response to your environment and knowledge
5. How to strengthen your visual language

  • 1. Oil Paint - Gamblin 1980 suggested brand. Read labels carefully: Do not buy water soluble or water mixable oil paints.
    •  Titanium white 150 ml tube
    •  Quinacridone red or permanent rose 37 ml
    •  Cadmium red or cadmium red hue 37 ml
    •  Ultramarine blue 37 ml
    •  Cerulean blue or cerulean blue hue OR phthalo blue 37 ml
    •  Hansa yellow or cadmium yellow 37 ml
    •  Yellow ochre 37 ml

    2. A paint palette (disposable is okay here)
    3. Oil paint brushes of various sizes. At least one big (2” and above) brush. Bristle brushes work best with oil paint, but you may choose to include some synthetic brushes for detail work.
    4. Liquin (medium), Turpenoid or Gamsol (thinner/ brush cleaner)
    5. One metal palette knife (2 to 3 inches) - mid-sized palette knife - no. 6 or 8 trowel shape with wooden handle and bent shank recommended
    6. 6 pre-stretched canvases or wood panels (at least 8×10 in.). Buying a pack of between 4-6 is recommended for cost-effectiveness. Some differently sized canvases are also good.
    7. 2 clean glass jars with lids – repurposed salsa or pasta sauce jars work well
