Art Writing and Ekphastric Poetry uses fandom as a guiding principle. Allowing ourselves space to be enthusiastic about art we will go see together, poems we read aloud in class, and songs that have come up synchronistically, we will scaffold towards ekphrastic poetry, or put plainly, a poetics of response. Taking cues from the formal inventiveness of visual poetry like Douglas Kearney's and Danez Smith's, as well as from the artistic dialogues within Richard Siken's, Anne Carson's and Jessica Q. Stark's poetry, what began as dialogues with visual and performance art, we will deepen our understanding of the interdisciplinary, and sharpen the tools in our own writerly kits.
