Contemporary botanical art is a thriving genre! Explore this captivating world with a deliberate approach to drawing and painting. We’ll focus on botanical art through the ages, take a look at what current artists are creating, and examine basic drawing and painting skills through the lens of botanical art. Learn techniques to accurately draw or paint subjects from the natural world. We’ll start with graphite and move on through to a dry brush watercolor technique. Each class will feature a demonstration, question and answer period, and time to create botanical art.

What you will learn:
1. An overview of botanical art
2. Drawing and painting techniques specific to botanical art
3. An understanding of the materials typically employed to create botanical art
4. Observation skills necessary to depict botanically-correct drawings or paintings
5. How to move from a sketch through to a finished drawing or painting

  • This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class.

You will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.

  • • A good quality sketchbook of your choice, such as the Stillman & Birn Zeta series, Hahnemuhle hot press watercolor, or any sketchbook with hot press watercolor paper. You can find these online from Etsy and order custom covers and pages/paper brands from shops such as wondercabin (owner: Lindsey Mears)

    An assortment of graphite tools:
    • Pencils or equivalent, 2H, HB, 2B, with sharpener
    • Kneaded eraser, and white eraser like Tuffstuff eraser stick

    • Micron pens: Black, sepia, graphite, whatever you like. Have a range of point sizes available in the same color.
    • Watercolor for either adding color to pen drawings or painting in your books. Any basic watercolor pan set will do; look for a small travel pan set if you plan to sketch and paint outside. You can make your own travel set by buying an empty tin and empty pans and filling them yourself with watercolor paint from a tube.
    • Brushes: Recommend a sable or synthetic #4 long-point watercolor brush with a springy tip.

We’ll talk about materials in the first class.
