Bram Stoker's 1897 novel DRACULA roughly coincided with the birth of cinema and with every decade since, filmmakers around the world have found a way to meld contemporary themes to the vampire myth. This class will look at five examples of filmmakers with ambitions beyond horror film conventions, whose work examines provocative ideas of identity, history and love through this classic cinematic monster. We'll discuss the history of the vampire genre and the artists in collaboration as well as enjoy post-screening conversation.

Films to be screened:
DRACULA: PAGES FROM A VIRGIN'S DIARY (2002, directed by Guy Maddin, Canada)
GANJA & HESS (1973, directed by Bill Gunn, U.S.)
THIRST (2009, directed Park Chan-wook, South Korea)
A GIRL WALKS HOME AT NIGHT (2014, directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, U.S.)
LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM (1988, directed by Ken Russell, U.K.)
