Exploring the Gown is a lecture and studio-based course designed to consider the life of world-renowned singer Marian Anderson (February 27, 1897 – April 8, 1993) in relationship to the gowns she wore. This course is being offered in collaboration with the Marian Anderson Museum and Historical Society and Opera Philadelphia.
Students in the course will learn about Anderson's life and career and gain basic skills related to patterning and sewing. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Anderson became known around the world for her talent on the stage as well as her role in the civil rights movement. Considering her life through the lens of material culture and fashion history, will give students the opportunity to have a hands-on experience of history.
Some knowledge of sewing is encouraged but not required. An interest in Marian Anderson is a must!
