Through the lens of video art's emergence and proliferation, we will dissect and discuss various canonical works with the intention of gleaning a deeper understanding of artistic process and technique.

Looking at both the formal elements of the works and their artistic implementation, we will attempt to demystify the process behind making impactful video art. This investigation will be supported by artworks, texts, a history of video technology, and occasionally, big-picture walk-throughs of how to achieve similar results from today's video tools.

Through this close interaction with video art is the opportunity for us to intimately discuss our own artistic practices. Whether looking to fine-tune your craft or invert your entire practice, we will generate a space for us to offer reflections and receive practical lessons in artistry. While we will strive to be grounded in video art throughout our approaches, students with backgrounds in other disciplines are welcome to contribute their own experience from an interdisciplinary perspective.

What you will learn:
1. A traceable framework of artists and influences from within and around the medium of video art
2. Knowledge of a video-centric artistic vocabulary for discussing formal elements
3. Develop an eye for deciphering the technical components of video production when viewing works of video
4. How to analyze and discuss elements of artistic process to further grow in one's own practice
