Designed for students who already have a grasp of basic drawing techniques, this class takes you deeper into form, structure, and expression while keeping at your pace. Students will be learning key concepts such as basic figure drawing, detailed rendering, intermediate perspective, use of color, and combining materials. Each class features a directed exercise designed to be used for more complex subject matter. This class is intended for those who are looking to take their drawing to their next level. We will draw from the nude model during the last four classes.

What you will learn:
1. Make detailed rendered value drawing of real objects
2. Create volumetric drawing using light and dark in multiple mediums
3. Gain basic understanding of the structure of the head and body
4. Handle complicated subjects and correctly place groups of objects
5. Begin to develop an understanding of decisive, quick sketching
6. Confidence and comfort with the materials

  • • Drawing pad 80 or 90 lb acid free smooth tooth white paper, suggested size 9x12, or portfolio of different types of paper to try out from vellum to medium grain
  • • Graphite pencils: 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B
  • • A couple of blending stumps
  • • Sandpaper or flint paper
  • • Charcoal pencil – soft or medium – General’s brand or something similar
  • • Red conte pencil - sanguine
  • • Ballpoint pens in different colors (can be a multicolor pen in red, blue, black and green)
  • • Kneaded eraser
  • • Stylus eraser such as Mono Zero
  • • Ruler
  • • Binder clips for attaching to paper to board
  • • (Optional/recommended) Small Sketchbook such as 6x8 (Dick Blick has small Fabriano in the front section for $6)

Barbara graduated with a B.F.A. in Illustration from Syracuse University in 1999, and immediately moved to NYC. She met success in shows at Figureworks Gallery and Get Real Art, but felt drawn to study classical painting in Florence, Italy. She lived there for one year studying drawing under Mario Pachioli. Then in 2004, she moved to Philadelphia on a full scholarship to study with Nelson Shanks at Studio Incamminati. It was here that she developed her portrait painting, drawing and color theory skills. She left the atelier in 2006 to work on a series of large paintings depicting figures of Greek mythology and began to explore landscape painting. After travelling and painting extensively, Barbara returned to Incamminati to finish the Professional Program in 2015 and served as a teaching fellow for two years. In addition to Fleisher, she currently teaches painting and drawing at Studio Incamminati, Wayne Art Center, Main Line Art Center, Abington Art Center, Journey’s Way, and Repenning Fine Arts in Audubon, NJ.
