This class will present the work of five American directors who have successfully maintained their idiosyncratic vision in the feature film form. We will examine the directors' visual styles, career trajectories, and unravel the themes both classical and modern that concern these filmmakers while delving into how the larger filmmaking business effects the film we see as an audience. Post-screening discussion is integral to our classes, giving us a multi-dimensional perspective into the ideas and meanings within the films' narratives.

Films to be screened:
SUPPORT THE GIRLS (2018, directed by Andrew Bujalski, 91 minutes)
MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY (2008, directed Barry Jenkins, 88 minutes)
NIGHT MOVES (2013, Kelly Reichardt, 113 minutes)
TAKE OUT (2004, directed by Sean Baker, 90 minutes)
APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR (2014, directed Desiree Akhavan, 90 minutes)
